In Year 9 students are focused on the following careers aims:
Students can describe, understand and put into practice the desired skills expected of them by next step providers and future employers.ÌýÌýÌý

By the end of Year 9, the programme will have allowed student to.Ìý

  • Students can describe a minimum of 4 employability skills employers and next steps providers are looking for.
    Ìý
  • Students can articulate experiences and activities both in and outside of the academy where they have shown or developed key employability skills.
    Ìý
  • Students can connect key employability skills required for their next step goals and aspirations.Ìý

What does the be skilled package include?

Employer Encounters / EventsÌýÌý Across all subject areas, our Career Champions work hard to ensure students have the opportunities to meet employers that link with their subject area. For example, in 2024 the following encounters took place:Ìý

  • Geography – architect working on Beechwood Park & a volcanologist
    English – Darren Shan, the author & the charity owner of Shelter.ÌýÌý
  • Computing – examined differing roles in the NHS whilst taking part in the ‘step into NHS’ competition.ÌýÌý
  • Engineering – met with a Cummins engineer and explored their role
    Ìý

When meeting an employer, the sessions will focus on the desirable skills for working in their sector.ÌýÌý

Professional Standards CurriculumÌý

Every Monday, in College Time, students will home in on one of our Professional Standards – Conduct, Dedication, Organisation, Pride and Values. Students will explore why this standard is required and expected of them; exploring how these standards can support them in future careers.Ìý
Trinity ChallengeÌý Year 9s will undertake the Trinity Challenge programme, in which students are tasked with completing a number of challenges that allow them to build on their employability skills. These are split into 4 main skill areas:Ìý

Duke of EdinburghÌý All Year 9 students will have the opportunity to complete the Duke of Edinburgh award. During their ‘Personal Development’ lessons they will work at tracking the following:Ìý

  • Volunteering workÌýÌý
  • Physical engagementÌýÌý
  • Skills
    Ìý

This will then lead them to completing a 2-day excursion. We believe that students who successfully complete the DofE award have shown real dedication to our 4 key employability skills throughout the year and have put them into practice.ÌýÌý

Lloyds Skills Builder EventÌý To allow students to demonstrate the skills they have developed across Year 9, in Term 4 students will take part in a Lloyds Skills Builder Event. This is an entire day event in which Lloyd’s banking group work with students in developing and presenting on an enterprise challenge. Students will put their skills of communication, critical thinking, resilience, and collaboration into practice and compete against each other.
